Valentine’s Day Playlist: Honorable Mentions

It wouldn’t be right of us to let the Valentine’s Day fun actually end on Valentine’s Day so we thought we would share some of the hopefuls for our playlist that just didn’t make the cut. Marissa’s list is up first because, well, I like her list more than mine. Ha ha.

Honorable Mentions: Marissa

Loneliness: Remain – Transfer

Transfer is a little bit Melancholy and this song has that sort of, “I’m just living to live” vibe about it.  Plus, I just love Transfer.

Tease: Halo Bender – The Halo Benders

“You Think You’re Heaven Sent, Gonna Get Your Halo Bent”

Sexy: I’m Gonna Love The Hell Out of You – The Silver Jews

An odd one, but I love it.  Something about the slow monotone approach of the Silver Jews makes almost every song sound a little bit naughty.

Puppy Love: Red Sweater – The Aquabats

It’s just cute. Smiles.

Sprung: Pictures of Lily – The Who

Falling in love with a sexy picture, just cause your a teenage boy, if that’s not sprung I don’t know what is.

Creepy Love: Saturday Night – The Misfits

I mean if you murder a girl, you shouldn’t sing song about being bummed out about it, it’s just rude.

Unrequited Love: My Man (Funny Girl) – Barbara Streisand

Heart breaking to say the least.

Proclamation: Winter Winds – Mumford and Sons

This is a “Holy Shit I’m In Love With You, but You Are Totally Terrible For Me” song.

In Love: Drifter – Mississippi Man

This is one of those songs that just touches of this sort of, we just happen to be perfect together things, with adorable and catchy lyrics, it’s one of my favorites.

Tragic Love: Farewell Reel – Patti Smith

Written after the death of her husband, an honest and heart wrenching account of the loss of a true love.

Post Break Up: Crown of Love – Arcade Fire

The swooning strings and Win Butler’s strong yet shaky voice give this song a pulse and intensity that isn’t characteristic of a post break up song.

It’s Just Another Day: Car – Built To Spill

‘You Get the Car, I’ll Get the Night Off”

Valentines Day Playlist: Cycles of Love: It’s Just Another Day

At long last, the cycle of love has come to an end (as has our playlists). This playlist is for those of us who don’t really pay much attention to Valentines Day. Perhaps you think it’s a corporate holiday or that picking one day to show your love for someone is stupid because you should show it every day. Maybe you are just indifferent to the whole idea. Well this is our list of songs not about love or romance. Enjoy your day. It’s just like any other.

It’s Just Another Day

Local Music – Crimson Calvary – Dirty Sweet

I will raise my arms into the night but only because you asked so nicely. This song ties for favorite from now defunct SD band Dirty Sweet. I love and miss your guitar rifts and breakdowns in your songs. So badass. You guys are missed.

Top 40 – Great DJ- The Ting Tings

I’ll be honest, I’m not entirely sure what this song is about but I remember watching The Ting Tings perform it live and being pretty happy. It’s light and dancy which makes any day better in my opinion. Plus it talks about drums of which, I am a fan.

Alternative Radio – No Rain – Blind Melon

Everything in life is beautiful, even the puddles gathering.  Blind Melon should have worked on some more hit songs though, a one hit wonder is a terrible thing.

Soundtrack – Thriller – Michael Jackson – This Is It

I’m a sucker for classics and whatever your opinion of Michael Jackson, you can’t deny he was one hell of an entertainer. The classics never die.

Misc – The World Blows My Mind – Crash Encore

Another local band making its way on the list.  Crash Encore has since disbanded and become about fifteen other bands since then, but they have left us with a plethora of a catalog and this song is one of my favorites. “The World, It Blows, My Mind, All The Time.”

Just enjoy life. That’s all we’ve got 🙂

Valentine’s Day Playlist: Cycles of Love: Tragic Love

Something’s wrong. You’re love didn’t stand the test of time like you thought it would. Now you’re spending your time with someone you don’t love. Well, I suppose you could still love them but they no longer love you. Either way, the love well has run dry and that’s nothing short of a tragedy. I should also note, there are far too many sad love songs which is why Marissa and I picked our own playlists. There’s just so much heartbreak out there.

Tragic Love

Amanda’s Picks
Local Music: Grown So Cold- Get Back Loretta

Nothing quite like a love that’s fizzled out which is exactly what this song is about. There is a haunting hope about escaping this cold love but lost love is still a tragedy.

Top 40: You Oughta Know- Alanis Morissette

Nothing quite like a woman scorned. I can tell you even if the breakup wasn’t bad, being replaced by someone else hurts. Sometimes we just like to think you’re thinking of us when you’re with the new one. Makes us feel better about us.

Alternative Radio: Pictures of You- The Cure

I suppose this song could have a creepy connotation associated with it, but all I hear is a song about a sad guy looking at pictures of his lost love. To think that he sees this pictures and believes her to be there is even more saddenning.

Soundtrack: Iris- City of Angels

I think this is widely accepted as one of the saddest love songs ever for a movie. While I haven’t seen the movie, the song itself is just haunting to me with phrases like, “when everything’s made to be broken, I just want you to know who I am” and “I’d give up forever to touch you.” I need a tissue.

Misc.: Bang Bang- Nancy Sinatra

If you have a special someone who is shooting you down (fake or otherwise) then that’s a relationship you should exit stage left from. Don’t let your baby shoot you down.

Marissa’s Picks

Local Music: Lie To Me – Kevin Martin

Haunting. Chilling.  Beautiful.  Kevin Martin wrote a song about deceit and trust that slices through to that tingling part of your part that will always sting when you’ve been wronged.

Top 40: You Don’t Bring Me Flowers – Barbara Streisand & Neil Diamond

A love gone cold, a love gone forgotten, a truly tragic waste of love.

Alternative Radio: I Could Spit On A Stranger – Pavement

“However you feel, Whatever it takes…” Stephen Malkmus, you fuck my shit up.(eloquent I know).

Soundtrack: “The Winner Takes It All” – Mamma Mia

Meryl Streep’s performance of ABBA’s classic break up song, “The Winner Takes It All” is stirring to say the least.  Revealing and raw even in the context of a fairly cheesy film.  The metaphor of the game that is love comes to a head, leaving the loser with nothing.

Misc : Sleeper – One Man Army

One Man Army tricks you into to thinking this might be a love song, but by the end of the first verse you are left to your own devices and there’s no telling what you’ll get yourself into.

Time to get over that break up hump. We’ve got you covered if you come back tomorrow.

Valentine’s Day Playlist: Cycles of Love: Proclamation

You’ve finally decided you are tired of sitting on your feelings. Good for you! It’s time to speak up and tell them how you feel. Who knows, they might feel the exact same way. Here are some songs to reinforce your smart decision to do something and if you aren’t quite there yet, maybe these will push you over the edge.
Proclamations
Local Music – Butch – Saint Motel

Butch is one of those songs that just makes you want to jump and dance and be a little bit of an idiot, it’s okay, we won’t tell anybody that you did.  The twist with Butch is that even though we are in love with this beautiful creature, we aren’t even sure what this beautiful creature is.  “I think I’m Into You, but What Am I Into?” the truth is, we don’t care, we just love this song.

Top 40 – For You I Will (Confidence) – Teddy Geiger

The name kind of says it all. It’s about time a guy finally grew a pair and decided to risk it and tell the girl of his dreams that he wants her. I know you guys have a hard time with this idea but we promise not to bite, hard.

Alternative Radio – Whistle for the Choir- The Fratellies

This is the love song that you wish a guy would sing to you.  It’s sweet, delicate, adorable , and ever so slightly crazy, but isn’t that what a budding romance is.  “So if you’re crazy, I don’t care, you amaze me.”

Soundtrack – 500 Miles – The Promclaimers

What better band to choose for the proclamation category than The Proclaimers? So, what do they proclaim? Listen to the song to find out what those slightly creepy, almost albino twins would do for the girl they love…

Misc – ABC’s of Love – Frankie Lymon

I didn’t know love came in terms of the ABC’s until I discovered The Lovers Dictionary. Long before that however, Frankie Lymon was singing the ABC’s to us. Glad to know he loves us enough for the whole alphabet.

Yay! You finally said it. Now you can be happy and in love, right? We got your love tunes so stay tuned.

Valentine’s Day Playlist: The Cycles of Love: Unrequited Love

If your affection for someone hasn’t crossed the creepy line then you are sitting quietly in unrequited love land. I’ve been there. We all have. It sucks. You’ve found the most perfect person (you think) and while they might know you exist, you just can’t pony up the nerve to step on a ledge and scream and shout about your feelings. It’s ok. You can just listen to these songs. Maybe you’ll get up the nerve.

Unrequited Love

Local Music – Back Then – The Stupid Daikini

So I realized the category is unrequited love and with our cycle of love this should be before the relationship, but this beautifully written song of love that is unrequited during the relationship.  The song is heartbreaking because it’s sung and written from a place of complete honesty.  This is an unreleased unmastered soundcloud link.

Top 40 – You Belong With Me – Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift has a knack for writing the cheesy love songs I’m a sucker for. This one especially speaks to the heart of knowing someone is perfect for you and for some stupid reason you two just aren’t together yet. Taylor and I sing about it all the time in my truck. You can join the fun too.

Alternative Radio – Animal – Neon Trees

Ever have a friend that you want to be something more? Tyler Glenn, singer of Neon Trees knows exactly how you feel. Just be careful when you want to take a bite out of some one’s heart, they might want it all to themselves.

Soundtrack – Leggie Blonde – Flight of the Conchords

This is a more of a lost opportunity, unrequited love.  Murray tells us of all the things he will never get to share with this leggie blonde.  Plus it features an office supply solo and a verse of The Thong Song.

Misc.  – Falling In Love With a Girl in a Coffee Shop – Landon Pigg

Oh Landon, this sweet sweet song was in a Sprint commercial a few years back and I still can’t help but be charmed by it. Perhaps it’s also because I met my ex at a coffee shop so it has a double meaning for me. That aside, keep staring at the cutie at the coffee shop. I bet she likes you too, especially if you sing this to her.

Are you tired of being in love and having the other not know? We got some tunes to motivatie you to take a stand. See ya tomorrow!

Valentine’s Day Playlist: Cycle of Love- Creeper Status

Sometimes the path of love takes a sharp left turn and you end up with someone who you thought was harmless but they really aren’t. Perhaps they call or message you incessantly. Maybe they just give off a weird vibe around you. Or, you might have a full on stalker. Chances are they might be listening to these songs. And let’s face it, we’ve all been creepers on Facebook. No one is immune to some mild stalking. We still love you though.

Creeper

Local Music – Beware – The Silent Comedy
The Silent Comedy boys warned you. They told you to beware. I mean, you might find yourself creeping in your lovers lair. Do they know who you are though?
Top 40 – Paparazzi – Lady Gaga

The paparazzi are a scary people. Even scarier when Lady Gaga says she will be a paparazzi until you love her back. True creeper status.

Top 40 – Every Breath You Take – The Police

The reason we have two top forty picks is because we couldn’t decide.  “Every Breath You Take” being the theme song for stalkers the world over, was essential.  Also, we were scarred that Sting might be watching us and take revenge if he didn’t make the list.

Alternative Radio – I Will Possess Your Heart – Death Cab for Cutie

While I appreciate the idea of this song, it pushes past unrequited love into that area of creepiness. When I think of someone possessing my heart, my mind jumps to the idea of a serial killer who just wanted my heart. But hey, thats just me and I watch a lot of crime tv.

Soundtrack – Hellfire – The Hunchback of Notre Dame

If you are a young woman, there is nothing creeper than an (unattractive) older man perving on you.  This is taken to a whole new level when that pervy old man is gonna kill your whole family if you don’t succumb to him. What’s a girl to do?

Misc – Do You Love Me – Nick Cave

What isn’t creepy about Nick Cave? I mean, he’s a creeper, through and through, but I love him just the same.  It’s mostly the way he asks the listener, “Do You Love Me?” that sends chills running up and down my spine.

You’re not a creeper or you’re trying to get over it? Good for you! Just sit there on all that love. Stay tuned!

Valentine’s Day Playlist: Cycles of Love : Sprung!

DAMN! You are looking fine today! To be sprung is a more than a crush and slightly less than ripping each other’s clothes off. It’s when you see that devilish grin from across the bar and your jaw suddenly feels a little loose and your pants a little tight.

Sprung
Local Music: Josephine – The Nervous Wreckords

We’ve all waited by the phone, just hoping it would ring and it would be “that person”, but what if that person was a bill collector?  I think I’d go default and all my credit cards then, call me Josephine.

Top 40: Baby Got Back- Sir Mix-A-Lot

This song haunted me in high school. I would hang out with the AV nerds and as soon as I walked up, they would put on this song. I can’t help it if I’ve got back but it’s nice to know someone out there that gets sprung by it.

Alternative Radio: Are You Gonna Be My Girl – Jet

From the first shake of the tambourine, your heels start tapping and your hips start shaking.  Jet may be sprung over a girl with long brown hair, but we’re are definitely sprung for Jet.

Soundtrack: Summer Nights – Grease

You know what they say about summer nights, right?

Misc.: Storm Warning- Hunter Hayes

Yes I know this is another country song. No I don’t care. This is a fun song about needing a heads up because this rad girl is rolling in and you just don’t know what to do. I also have to give props here because this song is completely written by Hunter Hayes from the guitar to the drums to the piano. Just watch the video and you’ll see what I mean.

We know you’re hard up for that sexy person. But have you maybe crossed the line? Stay tuned!
