New Band Love: Youngblood Hawke

If you’re looking for some fun new tunes you can dance to, look no further than LA’s Youngblood Hawke. Former Iglu & Hartley members Sam Martin and Simon Katz have teamed up with Tasso Smith, Alice Katz, and Nik Hughes to provide us with some undeniably catchy and upbeat indie pop music.  Their October residency at The Satellite was one of my favorites of the year as every week was a lively dance party guaranteed to put a smile on anyone’s face.

The band recently released a new video for a remix of their song “Burning Down” which features Angela Trimbur (no stranger to catchy music video dancing). Amanda’s SD Concert Calendar 12/12-12/18

Well the holidays are knocking at our doors and it seems like we were just having some summer fun. I can tell you that the holidays bring wonderful holiday shows to our lovely San Diego area. I myself was part of the media crew for 91X and was at Wrex the Halls both days. When I wasn’t shooting some video or stills, I was watching bands like Cage the Elephant (my personal fav), Florence + The Machine (from the side sage!), Naked and Famous, Mutemath (headstand on a piano just because), Blink 182 (Travis Barker is amazing!!), Pennywise, Switchfoot (super fun), Death Cab for Cutie (watched Ben Gibbard do a drum breakdown from side stage), and soooo many more bands! It was wonderful and magical as always. Never thought I would have the opportunity to do such great things!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 12/12-12/18

Last Friday night, I had another one of those epic evenings on the Sunset Strip. I started at The Viper Room to see San Diego’s Kevin Martin. Then I ran to The Key Club to catch Jon McLaughlin and Stephen Kellogg and The Sixers with what must have been one of the most polite audiences I’ve ever been a part of. In drastic opposition, I stopped by The Roxy to witness some of the magic that is Camp Freddy. This week’s special guests included Neon Trees, Linda Perry, Sebastian Bach, Paul Stanley (KISS), and Fred Durst. I was going to head back to The Viper for the after party, but got sidetracked by some friends and pizza at Frankie and Johnny’s. Nights like these remind me why I love The Sunset Strip.

Monday night I’ll be back on The Strip for High Voltage Magazine’s Holiday Party at On the Rox. This will be the first of many holiday parties/charity events going on this week featuring some great artists and culminating in one of my favorite events of the year: The Hotel Cafe’s two day holiday party. I barely survived last week. I can’t remember the last time I pushed my poor body so hard for so long. I can’t say it was a bad week because it was peppered by some amazing musical experiences, but it’s not a good sign when going to a show is a “break” rather than the end of your day. But it is weeks like these that make me most thankful for great live music and its ability to get me through just about anything.

Here’s to hoping this week can be fabulous without the severe sleep deprivation!  Musically, there is a lot of promise. Friday I’m going to wish I could be in 10 places at once. Kristen’s Christmas Song Mini Mix

It’s after Thanksgiving which means, time to put in the Christmas music! I was excited to uncheck all my tunes in my Christmas playlist, but here a few of the tunes I was most looking forward to hearing once again:

River- Joni Mitchell …this is my favorite Christmas song. Of all time. I have many versions but no one does it quite like Joni.

 

Merry Ex-mas – Lelia Broussard and Jake Newton…a couple top notch singer-songerwriters got together and wrote a killer x-mas tune. Fast becoming one of my favorites. Sometimes I cheat and listen to it out of season…

 

“Christmas Day” – Dido…my junior year in college I started every single day during the holiday season with this Christmas song sung by one of my favorite voices. I still think it’s the best way to start a wintery morning.

 

 “Christmas Is All Around” – Billy Mack… Love Actually is my favorite holiday movie. Actually it’s one of only two Christmastime films I really enjoy (the other being A Muppet Christmas Carol)

 

“Maybe This Christmas” – Ron Sexsmith…say what you will about The OC, but that show put out some great music including a Christmas soundtrack which has become one of my go to holiday albums. This song is one of the many gems from that album.

 

“Bittersweet Eve” – Belasana…you can tell I love the happy holiday songs… honestly, these songs make me happy. I swear!

 

“Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” – Judy Garland…classic!
