Tomorrow begins another journey to Austin for that magical week that is SXSW Music.  Combining my two greatest passions, live music and research, I can’t wait to hit the ground running (sometimes literally) from venue to venue discovering all the up and coming bands from around the world.

LA is the best because there are always new bands coming through waiting to be discovered.  This week, some of my top SXSW picks are also coming to LA including a very stacked Monday night that starts with Sam Fender at the Moroccan Lounge and carries over to It’s a School Night at Bardot featuring The Snuts, Odette, and Tamino.

I went to a fiber arts brunch today to catch up with some friends. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 2/25-3/3

Oscar Night! I don’t have a clear favorite this year, but excited (as always) to see who will end up the big winners.  The big winner last week was clearly long-time band love, Badflower, whose debut album, OK, I’m Sick, was released to chart topping success and a killer live show at The El Rey.  It’s rare to find a band whose new material continues to inspire, but these guys have reached new heights (and a new audience it seems) with an incredibly contemporary album that absolutely rocks.  I’ll need to see them again ASAP as they neglected to play my new favorite Badflower song, “Wide Eyes”.

The exciting shows continue next week with more favorite bands and several opportunities to check out newer artists.  Show pick of the week must go to Lukas Graham at The Grammy Museum.  Speaking of Lukas Graham, it looks like their big show at The WIltern has been rescheduled to October.

Amanda’s SD Concert Calendar 2/18-2/24

First, I’d like to apologize that my calendar post didn’t publish. I didn’t notice it until Sunday when I went to do my calendar post for next week. It’s usually a set it and forget it thing so I didn’t anticipate that it wouldn’t publish and for those of you who read this (whoever you are) should this happen again (but I hope it doesn’t) you can message me on Instagram @scarletttrinity because I will see that as opposed to our swamped LMN inbox.

Now, let me tell you about my Saturday night… Holy crap I forgot what shows with big production can do in terms of making other forms of magic happen. I hadn’t seen Panic! at the Disco in forever, having missed out the last time he came through town and I’m currently regretting my life choices. The production value was amazing on top of having a fantastic setlist plus his insane energy… Let’s just say that it’s something I won’t soon forget. And I have video on my phone of him playing drums that I will attempt to be 1/4 as good as.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 2/18-2/24

Experienced a delightful moment today when I turned on NPR and stumbled upon a rebroadcast of Science Friday where they were talking about their book club pick, N.K. Jemisin’s The Fifth Season. Just so happens that my book club discussed the very same book last week!  Delightful!  The scientist-heavy panel brought a different perspective to the book which takes place in a world where extreme natural disasters bring about a new (a fifth) season with the potential to shift the foundations of society.  It’s a great read; the first in a trilogy. I wish the Science Friday panel would have discussed the literary merits a bit more. The use of the 2nd person to tell the story of one of the characters was slightly divisive in my book club and not even touched upon during the broadcast.  As always, book club needed more time.

Big week next week in the music realm. Between KidEyes at Moroccan Lounge, Badflower’s big album release show at the El Rey, and one of my top SXSW picks, Talos, opening for Aurora at The Fonda, there are quite a few can’t miss shows!
