Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 12/31-1/6

Happy New Year!! Whatever you end up doing to celebrate the transition into 2013, I hope you stay safe and have a blast. Once again I am foregoing my former tradition of staying in and watching Star Wars in favor of some live music. My concert of choice this year is Dirty Sweet at The Griffin in San Diego! A one-off reunion show from a band I love that hasn’t played in a couple of years. How can I refuse? I think more bands “on hiatus” should do this kind of thing.

Anyway, I’m really looking forward to so many shows coming in the New Year, starting with next week! I’m particularly excited about Thursday night at The Roxy with Lakes, The Active Set and Royal Teeth. I hope to see you all out at a show soon!

Here are my other top picks:

Monday: Vintage Trouble at The Roxy (8pm)
ALSO: Puddle of Mudd at Whiskey a Go Go (7pm)
ALSO: Petty Cash at Smoke (10pm)

This fall, High Voltage Magazine is coming back with print issues. The cover artist is Fitz & The Tantrums and inside there are interviews, playlists, reviews for new albums and more! I have the privilege of being involved with this project and I’m really excited about it. To raise some funds for the first issue, we have been running a Pledge Music Campaign with part of the proceeds going to The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF.

We have collected rare and unreleased tracks from artists such as The Silent Comedy, Taylor Locke and The Roughs, Billy Morrison, Hurricane Bells, and more. These songs form a High Voltage compilation album that can be obtained at our basic pledge value of $10. At other levels you can pledge to receive items such as a signed copy of our fall issue, tickets to a show of your choice at select venues, or the chance to be a writer for a day for www.iamhighvoltage.com.

Currently sitting in the back of a conference room listening to a panel on music marketing at The San Diego Music Thing. I love this conference, both for the informative day-time panels and the nights jam packed with fantastic local bands. I just have to say that my brain is a bit mushy right now because Friday night I saw two of my very favorite bands, Nico Vega and The Silent Comedy, in the same evening and I’m pretty sure my mind was so completely blown that it is no longer fully functional. If I have time, I’ll do a more complete post about this fantastic event.

There are several shows I’m particularly looking forward to this week. Songwriter extraordinaire, Dan Wilson, is in town for it’s a school night at Bardot Monday night and mind-melters, The Silent Comedy, are doing a free show Thursday at Villian’s Tavern downtown. I also don’t want to miss SXSW find Tailor Made Fable from Montreal (Tuesday, Viper Room) and last week’s new music recommendation The Horrible Crowes (Weds, Troubadour).

But there are tons of great shows. Here’s what I’d suggest:

Monday: Big Black Delta FREE at The Satellite (11pm)
ALSO: It’s a School Night at Bardot featuring Gaby Moreno and Dan Wilson (10:30)…free with RSVP http://www.itsaschoolnight.com/

ALSO: Kopecky Family Band and GIVERS at The Troubadour (9,10)
ALSO: New Liberty at The Viper Room (11:15)
ALSO: Songwriters in the Round at Room 5 (9pm)

Tuesday: We Are Augustines at The Bootleg (10:30)
ALSO: Tailor Made Fable at The Viper Room (7:30)
ALSO: The Shakers at Molly Malone’s (9pm)
ALSO: Justin Hopkins at Café Boogaloo in Hermonsa Beach (6:30)
ALSO: Beachwood Rockers Night at The Piano Bar (8:30)…FREE music all night

Weds: The Horrible Crowes at The Troubadour (10pm)
ALSO: The White Buffalo at The Bootleg (9:30)
ALSO: Cracker at The Satellite (10pm)
ALSO: Some Hear Explosions and Nightmare the Cat at Club Moscow (9pm)
ALSO: Juke Kartel at The Hotel Cafe (9:30)

ALSO: Curtis Peoples and Boyce Avenue at The Music Box (7pm)
ALSO: Brian Wright at The Foundry on Melrose (9pm)
ALSO: Robbers on High Street at The Roxy (10pm)
ALSO: Lex Land at The Echo (7pm)
ALSO: Lady Antebellum at The Troubadour (8pm)…need to win tickets through a radio station (Country 105FM), but this would be an awesome show!

Friday: Lobster Fest featuring Andy Clockwise (9:15)… http://lobsterfest.com/music/

Looks to be another busy week ahead…and an especially good one for The Viper Room. I’m more than a little excited to finally see Our Lady Peace perform live…and on such a tiny stage (insert squeals of delight).

I’m also really looking forward to next Friday/Saturday as it is The San Diego Music Thing. It’s basically a mini SXSW in San Diego. Weds: Gabe Dixon at The Hotel Cafe (7pm)
ALSO: So & So at The Viper Room (9:40)
ALSO: The Muddy Reds at The Central (11pm)

New Music Tuesday 8/30/11 featuring Butch Walker, Mike Doughty, Puddle of Mudd

Posted on by .

Butch Walker- The Spade

Butch Walker is back! And with the Black Widows in tow, they’ve put together a new album full of fantastic new tunes. I haven’t heard the recordings, but I saw the band play the new album live last weekend at Dangerbird Records and immediately put in my order. Butch came out rocking the banjo, but what I love most about Butch Walker (the witty lyrics and rock n roll vibe) were all over the new tunes. This is one for the collection for sure.

Buy it on itunes or amazon.

Mike Doughty- Yes & Also Yes

I’ve been a huge Mike Doughty fan ever since I heard a few notes from a song off of Haughty Melodic. His songs have a way of creeping into your head and just sticking there. His new album Yes & Also Yes will definitely make it into my shopping cart today. Give it a listen!

Here’s a great interview that talks about the album

Buy it on amazon.

Puddle of Mudd Re:(Disc)overed

Puddle of Mudd is doing a CD of cover songs.  They’re doing takes of songs by the likes of The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Elton John, and Led Zeppelin. I’m interested to see if they can make these tunes them their own or if they’re just poor copies of the originals. This could be very good. This could be very bad. Regardless, I need to check it out! They are playing The Viper Room September 28th with Dead Sara. I need to be prepared!

Buy it on Amazon or Itunes

Enjoy the new tunes!
