I hope everyone is hunkering down, staying in, and still enjoying some music. I suppose it’s somewhat comforting to know that I can see a great band live at just about any time of the day by simply going online to Facebook (FB), Instagram (IG), YouTube (YT) or Twitch (never had a reason to check out Twitch before!).  Some online highlights from my last week include performances from G-Flip, The Talbott Brothers, Sarah Harmer, and Tony Lucca playing “Canyon Songs” front to back.

Since a lot of these events seem to pop up last minute, I’ve been updating my list throughout the week at https://localmusicnation.net/category/la-concert-calendar/.  I also modified the list to make it a bit more suitable for my needs. I hope it works for you too.

This was the post that was supposed to be telling everyone about all the great sets I caught at SXSW. I tried to make a SXSW Top 10 artists list, but it was too depressing. I did listen to most all the announced showcasing artists, however, and made a Spotify playlist of the ones I wanted to check out, so if you’re looking to discover something new, here you go!

 

 

There are no concerts going on with the city of LA (and hopefully most of the world) under lockdown. It’s a crazy time for us all but many artists have decided to take their performances online. There have been SO many live stream shows pop up on Instagram (IG), Facebook (FB), YouTube (YT) and more. And since they are happening all over the globe, you can find a good show just about any time of the day/night!

 

My live stream show strategy has been logging into my platform of choice (for me, that’s Facebook), and seeing who is currently live.  I’ve caught quite a few artists that way (The Talbott Brothers, Jewel, Tony Lucca, Nadia Reed to name a few).  There are also artists like Mary Chapin Carpenter, Glorious Sons and The Franklin Electric whose daily song posts keep me going! My favorite virtual run-in was with one of my absolutely favorite artists from Philadelphia, Paul Keen, who never comes to LA. I’m thinking this could be a great way to discover more local artists!

Well, it took away my SXSW and then my baseball and now my friends and my live music. This coronavirus has really been…a challenge. It’s my birthday week and I’d say my plans have been whittled down to a large boba and sitting on the beach with a book, but it will probably rain, I somehow lost the book I was reading, and who knows how much longer the boba shops will stay open.

Speaking of things being open, while many of LA’s music venues have shut down for at least the rest of the month, a few of the smaller rooms still seem to be hosting shows. This is not a recommendation to go out, simply a compilation of choice local shows that still seem to be a go. If going out, be safe and be sure to check social media day of to make sure events are still happening.  I’m seeing many artists announcing virtual concerts so what I would recommend is using your extra time at home to support your favorite artists in that way or discover some new ones! Maybe I’ll post a playlist…

2020 has been rough! These last couple of weeks in particular have been difficult to get through, culminating with the cancellation of my favorite week of the year at SXSW. I am doing my best to focus on the silver lining which is that instead of Austin, I will be spending my birthday week in Florida watching my baseball team at Spring Training (something I have never done because of the timing with SXSW).  I guess I will be watching the next generation of baseball players rather than sampling the next musical breakouts…

I was going to use this post to talk about how excited I am for my annual trip to Austin for SXSW, but I just read a report about how petitioners are hoping to cancel the event due to the coronavirus. Last week wore me down and by Friday I didn’t have much left. Then, I open my computer to see what new music has been introduced to the world and I spy a new single from Biffy Clyro (fave band alert!).  I press play on “Instant History” and suddenly my world’s problems melt away and for a little over 3 minutes, everything is great.  Between the Biffy Clyro single, Badflower finally releasing “Move Me”, and the Alanis Morrisette version of “Smiling” from the Jagged Little Pill musical, I’d say it was New Music Friday for the win!

The most unexpected frustration about not being able to speak is feeling rude when you’re out in public. Just going to the store offers a series of opportunities to say, “thank you” or “excuse me” and when you can’t physically utter words, it feels impolite. I am currently on day 3.5 of some sort of laryngitis that has rendered me mute.  I am very grateful for self-checkouts and only wish my fave boba place had one so I could order a hot honey lemon drink w/ jellies without using some sort of awkward note.

I hope my voice comes back for next week because we have some hootin’ and hollerin’ to do Friday night at The Viper Room as The Shakers reunite for one night only! Woot!
